In September of 1963
we met televisions most unusual ~
~ and genetically unexplainable ~
pair of relatives.
ABC introduced identical cousins
Cathy and Patty Lane,
both played by seventeen year old
Patty Duke.
The Patty Duke Show
represented American adolescence
to an entire generation.
Real life for Patty Duke
was a debilitating combination
of psychological abuse
from her manager guardians,
and the deep depression
caused by the abuse.
Patty and her mother
were on their own
and a husband and wife manager team
manipulated, gained control of
and completely dominated them
while they squandered
most of the money Patty made
on their own appetites.
After a two decade struggle
with clinical depression,
the fact that she survived at all
is an extraordinary miracle.
Her exceptional talent and charm
never failed her as she won
critical praise on the big screen
in wonderful films like
The Miracle Worker
with Anne Bancroft.
Today Duke lives on a farm
in pastoral northern Idaho.
" I am lucky, Patty confides.
to have this funny balance.
Once in a while
I go away for a few weeks
to do a film or a TV movie.
Then I come back
and I'm just the lady
with the pigs again."
Patty has finally agreed
to rejuvenate
the look alike cousins,
Cathy and Patty Lane
in April of 1999.
Why? She smiles.
"Two reasons ~
first, it's an opportunity
to revisit those people
who had a seemingly easier
time in TV-land.
Second, it's the kind of money
I simply can't refuse.
Oh, and there's another
very important reason.
All these nice strangers
keep coming up to me
and ask me to do it."
Patty Duke is one of a kind.
She is a courageous survivor
and a consummate actress.
The Patty Duke Show Theme
Meet Cathy whos lived most everywhere
From Zanzibar to Berkeley Square,
But Pattys only seen the sights
A girl can see from Brooklyn Heights.
What a crazy pair!
But theyre cousins,
identical cousins all the way.
One pair of matching bookends,
different as night and day.
Where Cathy adores a minuet,
the Ballets Russes and crpe suzette,
Our Patty loves her rock and roll,
a hot dog makes her lose control,
What a wild duet!
Still theyre cousins,
identical cousins and youll find,
They laugh alike,
They walk alike,
At times they even talk alike.
You can lose your mind,
When cousins are two of a kind.
Mary Tyler Moore
Mary offered something
on The Dick Van Dyke Show
that TV audiences
were not used to seeing
~ honesty.
Beneath the shellacked
Jackie Beauvier Kennedy bouffant
and behind that thousand watt smile
was a slightly neurotic,
occasionally awkward,
sometimes tongue tied,
very real, honest to goodness woman.
She was a woman who wore pants
to do her housework,
which incited a continental fashion craze.
She stood up to her husband,
fretted about her first gray hair,
worried about raising her son right
and once in a while,
burned the pot roast.
She might not have been
Gloria Steinem,
but her Laura Petrie
was light years ahead
of other TV housewives
at the time.
By the time
The Dick Van Dyke Show
wrapped in 1966,
Mary had created
the rarest of all creations
in the cookie cutter world
of network television.
She created an original!
Three years later,
after a brief fling
with the big screen,
a slightly older
and significantly wiser
Mary came home to televsion.
The Mary Tyler Moore Show
featured her as the main attraction.
Her name was in the title.
Her money was on the line
and her reputation was at risk.
She had learned
her sitcom lessons well.
Mary wisely cast herself
as the voice of sanity
and allowed
the unique insanity of
Rhoda Morganstern,
Phyllis Lindstrom,
Lou Grant,
Murray Slaughter,
Ted Baxter
and Sue Ann Niven
to swirl around her.
Her positive influence persists
in movies like Ordinary People,
guest appearances like on Ellen
and the possibility of reinventing
an older and wiser duo of
Mary and Rhoda.
Most all of us
still remember her as
Mary Richards.
The Mary Tyler Moore
Show Theme Song
You can turn the world on
With your smile.
You can take a nothing date
And suddenly make it
All seem worthwhile.
Well its you girl
And you should know it.
With each glance
And every little movement you show it.
Where you gonna run?
No need to fake it.
You have a chance.
Why dont you take it?
Youre gonna make it after all!
More golden television shows
will be added in the fture!
